La banda había planeado inicialmente para el título de su álbum el nombre Metal Up Your Ass, que contaba con una carátula con un inodoro en la que una mano con una daga salía dentro de él. Sin embargo, Megaforce los instó a cambiarlo, y finalmente cambiaron la carátula del álbum con una imagen menos ofensiva en la que aparece la sombra de una mano soltando una maza ensangrentada, y el nombre del álbum por Kill 'Em All dicho nombre (Mátalos a Todos) provenía de una frase del bajista Cliff Burton a causa del enfado que produjo en el grupo la negativa de diversas distribuidoras de discos a comercializar el álbum con el título que el grupo quería darle
La reedición por Elektra Records añadió las canciones "Blitzkrieg" (una canción de la banda del mismo nombre) y "Am I Evil?" (de Diamond Head).

No Life 'Til Leather es el nombre de un demo de 7 canciones grabado por la banda Metallica en julio de 1982. Dentro del demo destacan las canciones Metal Militia, Phantom Lord y Seek & Destroy por ser la primera vez que éstas canciones fueron grabadas en una cinta.
En verano de 1982 el baterista de la banda Lars Ulrich, había entablado amistad con Kenny Kane, dueño de un sello punk llamado 'High Velocity', que era una división de Rocshire Records, una compañía de grabación de Orange County. Kane estaba interesado en Metallica y les dió la oportunidad de grabar un EP, pero una vez terminadas las grabaciones, Kane se dió cuenta de que Metallica no era una banda de punk rock y terminó desinteresándose. La banda tomó las cintas que terminarían por convertirse en el demo 'No Life 'Til Leather'.
Por aquel entonces, Dave Mustaine aún estaba de guitarrista principal, y desde luego aún no había llegado Cliff Burton, que fue el último; el que tocaba el bajo era Ron McGovney. Y vivían en Los Ángeles.
